Networking
A network is a system whereby computing devices are linked to share information and resources. The connection can be done as peer-to-peer or client/server. There are several different techniques that can be employed to set up and manage a network. A computing network is categorized according to several characteristics such as: medium for data transport, communications protocol, scale, topology, organizational scope, and more.
A communications protocol defines the formats and rules for information exchange over the network in question. Popular protocols include: Ethernet (a family of connectionless protocols used in Local Area Networks), and Internet Protocol Suite (IPS).
Scale describes physical and/or organization reach with regard to the network. The various types of networks differ in several ways, most commonly with respect to usage, trust level, and access rights.
Network topology features several frequently used layouts. Among these layouts are: bus network, start network, ring network, mesh network, and a fully connected network.
