Internet Security
Internet security is a type of computer security specifically related to the Internet. Its purpose is to establish measures to counter attacks over the Internet. The Internet is an insecure pipeline for information exchange, leading to a high risk of intrusion or fraud, such as phishing. Different methods are utilized to protect data upon its transfer; most commonly, encryption.
Information transmission over the Internet is encrypted and secured in a variety of ways, depending on the method of communication. Common protocols are: SSL and TLS for web traffic, PGP and MIME for email, and IPsec for network layer security.
Firewalls are an essential part of internet security as well. A firewall controls access between networks and put restrictions on data packets passing to and from private networks. Since all incoming and outgoing traffic must pass through the firewall, it has the ability to screen network traffic and block any questionable or dangerous connections. This is an essential component to preventing the contraction and spread of any and all malware.
